Mount Meru, standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 ft), is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and a fantastic trek for hikers seeking a shorter, less crowded alternative to Kilimanjaro. This 4-day trek takes you through lush forests, scenic ridges, and alpine terrain, with the chance to see giraffes, buffalo, and colobus monkeys on the lower slopes.
You’ll trek with an armed ranger and a professional mountain guide, staying in mountain huts each night. The highlight is the summit push to Socialist Peak, where you’ll watch the sunrise over Kilimanjaro before descending back down.
Mount Meru is also an excellent acclimatization climb for those planning to attempt Kilimanjaro afterward, but it’s a rewarding adventure on its own.
Mount Meru is shorter and less physically demanding, but the summit day is still challenging.
Yes, an armed ranger is mandatory for safety, as wildlife like buffalo can be encountered on the lower slopes.
You’ll stay in mountain huts with bunk beds and basic facilities no need to carry a tent.
